• I am trying to find my birth father. I was told his name is Jack Devitt. He would have known my mother, Lois, (I believe her last name may have been Tucker.) in the late 1950's, early 1960's as I was born in December 1960. I am told he knows of my existance and saw me once before I was placed for adoption. If you have any information that may be of help, it would be greatly appreciated. • I dont know if you got this message or not years ago a man by the name of Jim Devitt from Philadelphia came to research his roots he visited oliver lockhart now deceased as part of his research into this connection. Jims father married an Ann Lockhart the family did not approve of the marriage the house the lived in has always been known as devitts Cottage. Jim was a cousin of my late fathers. He lived in Sarasota Florida for a while but he wrote a book about the Boyd and Lockharts which covered the Devitt connection. My mother aunt and neighbours helped in the research and a lady by the name of Madge Carlson although she had pieces of it wrong and jim was very hard to correct on these area. • Hi Tami, I just found your site on Yahoo and wished to contact the Minnesota Devitt's. I have been working on our family tree, and found a great deal of intormation on Yahoo under Margaret Devitt family, who was my great, great grandmother. Evidently she came to the U.S. in the late 1840s with her children, Patrick (1817-1869) m. Catherine Kelly; Anthony (1820-1865), Catherine (1828-1887), Barbara (1836-1898) and Michael. My great-grandfather Patrick and his wife Catherine had several children: Margaret, Catherine, Thomas, Andrew, Mary, James, and Ann. My grandfather was James Devitt, who married Catherine Delaney. Their children were Josephine, Cyril J., Louis A., Rose C. and Margaret C. Rose Cecelia was my mother, who married Elmer Brosofske and they had three daughters: Margaret, Mary Louise, and myself - Catherine. I found the Margaret Devitt site very informative and suggest you check it when possible. Also you can contact the Newsletter of the Dakota County Genelogical Society, P.O. Box 74, South St. Paul, MN 55075. My grandfather was born in Rosemont, MN and he and his wife and family lived for some time in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, before moving back to St. Paul. • This weekend I attended the 2007 graduation ceremony at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. I was there for the graduation of my son, Michael Devitt. I noticed in the program that one of ND's best, Edward F. Devitt III, was also graduating in the School of Science. This is a rare occasion for a Devitt. Running into another Devitt in person. At the start of the ceremony, who sits down next to me but Edward Devitt II. This happens by chance and turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. • Hi Tami, my name is John Devitt, born in Dublin Ireland. I come from a long line of John Devitts. My dad John Devitt was born in Cashel Co Tipperary where there are a number of Devitts. The Cashel Devitts have lived in that area for 200 years and most accept that ther originally came down from county Donegal. I believe one or more of your e-mailers has it correct when they wtote that the Devitts were originally Dutch settlers from the Early 1600s. I have lived in Chicago for 30 years and I am married to a Roma Mc Laughlin from County Donegal, we are blessed with 4 children Fiona, Colin, Kenneth and Jillian.If you visit Ireland, check out The Rock Of Cashel an imposing structure more than a 1000 yrs. old where my Uncle Pat, my dads oldest brother is buried the last generation permitted to be buried in "The Rock". There are pockets of Devitts in Clare, Tipperary and Donegal with Davitts in Mayo. We have branched out to all corners of the globe which I know is a good thing for the world. • My Grandfather John James Hartigan married Mary Davitt. She was born in County Clare in 1862, died Albany, NY in 1898 and is buried in East Greenbush New York. Her father was born Patrick Davitt in County Clare in 1833 and died 1898 in Abany, NY. Patrick married Mary Considine born in Ireland. Patrick's father was Michael Davitt and his wife was Bridget Davitt. This is all the information I have. If you have any more information, I would appreciate it.

• Hi .... my name is Marty Devitt. I tried to email Terence Devitt but it could not be delivered. I am from the Minnesota Devitts. My father was one of three boys and my grandfather was one of fourteen children. The James Devitt family lived in St. Paul Minnesota (my great grandfather). His son Thomas Patrick Devitt was born in 1872 and died in 1921. My uncle Ed (1911-1992) was a federal judge from 1954 until his death. He presided over the district court in Minnesota for many of those years. When I read Terence's email, it sounded like he might have had some of the information a bit jumbled. (As often happens when we rely on our somewhat vague Irish oral traditions) It seems that anyone from the St. Paul area named Devitt is probably related, since there were so many siblings in that one family. • I am not a Devitt, but found on the internet that your grandfather, William Devitt IV, had founded a non-profit TB sanitorium near Allenwood, Pennsylvania. I am putting together a family scrapbook and have had a Birthday Greetings postcard showing the Aspden Building - Devitt's Camp for many years. My father had TB in the late 1930's or early 1940's and had spent 6 months in a sanitorium in Pennsylvania. It was probably not after 1941, because he was deferred from service in World War II because of it. We had been told that the sanitorium was on the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg, but never knew where specifically or any other datails. I, therefore, assume that this is where he recovered from the TB. His name was Frank Grabski and if you know of how to obtain any information on his stay there that I might be able to access would greatly appreciated. By the way, he died in 1986 at age 71, but never had any reocurrance of the disease, although his lung that was collapsed as part of the cure remained so or, at least, to some degree. Therefore, the treatment was successful. My name is also Frank Grabski, but not a junior because he had no middle name and I do, and I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. • Trying to find any information on a James Devitt (b.1870 d.1946) He emigrated to San Diego from Ballagh, Ennistimon, Co.Clare. date unknown, Son of James Devitt (b.1832 d.unknown). Had a number of brothers, two being Michael Devitt and Patrick Devitt (who I descended from). My father, brothers,sisters and parents(Jimmy & Bridget Devitt of Ennistimon) where going to emigrate to his uncles but he died shortly before they were due to leave so they cancelled. My father George Terrence Devitt was born in St Paul MN, moved to Wisconsin where he worked and lived and has been deceased since 1984. He has a sister, Jane Devitt (Hintz), who lives in Seattle WA and is now 86.   My full name is Patrick Joseph Devitt, I am 33 and live in Brookline, MA (near Boston). I was born in Bremerton, WA and grew up in nearby Silverdale, WA. Went to college at U. of Washington in Seattle.

  My father was Duane Alan Devitt (b. 1939 d. 1980), born in Fargo, ND. His father was Patrick Devitt, born somewhere around ND or MN (I think), not sure exactly when - probably in the 1910s. I believe his father came from Ireland - County Sligo I think or possibly Mayo.

• Hi Tami, This is really neat see to your home page. My sister Debra Lynn Devitt ran across it at work the other day. I also have a sister named Teresa Devitt. I am William Devitt VII. I was born and raised in Houston, Tx. January 17, 1964. My father William Devitt VI was born and raised in Philadelphia Pa.

  He has been a mining Engineer his whole life and was transfered to Colorado and then Texas.My great Grandfather was Dr. William Devitt IV who founded the Tuburculosis Sanitarium called Devitts Camp in Allenwood, PA. in April 1912. The camp today is a Drug and alcohol abuse clinic. His father William Devitt III was a well known fisherman that came over from Ireland. Both of of Their Original portraits hang in my Home office today. William Devitt VIII just turned 6 in March. Ironically His birthday is on the same day(march 8) as my fathers. My two other sons are Christopher Austin Devitt 4 and Andrew Russell Devitt 10 months. This has been really a neat experience. I have only ran across two other Devitts outside of my family before. I have another daughter Teresa in Houston, plus a son, William VII in Houston. And he has 3 boys, the oldest is William Devitt VIII. (No middle names for any of us, including all the way back to #1 who lived in Londonderry, Ireland. My dad's father, William Devitt IV, was a young boy when his family left Killybegs, Ireland, in 1888 for Phila. PA. They had a fishing boat at Killybegs.

  I have 3 brothers, John (Jack) Christopher Devitt, who lives in northeast Thailand now, Robert (Steve) Stephen Devitt of Lewis, CO, and my other brother, Michael Allen Devitt of Tucson is recently deceased. Brother Jack has researched our family geneology extensively by going twice to Ireland and visiting cemeterys, churchs, etc. and we have an interesting diagram leading back further into other family names. My grandfather, William Devitt IV, was an MD in Phila and later in 1912 founded and operated Devitt's Camp near Allenwood, PA, a non-profit TB sanitorium where I lived as a boy while my father, William V, was superintendent. I would be interested in hearing from him, he mentions that the name John runs all down the family line....My great grandfather was John Devitt, he came to Tasmania on the " Kingston in 1844 with his widowed mother Catherine, also his sister of ten years who was also named Catherine. John was 21 yrs. when he settled in Richmond Tasmania, he married in the Catholic Church there in 1856. John Devitt the BBC correspondent who is a decendant of Sir Thomas Devitt Bart. advised me some years adgo that his family who originally came from Ireland but may have been decendants of Dutch settlers called De Witt. • Hi Tami, My grandmom was a Devitt. Mary Devitt born in Phila., PA July 27, 1893. Her father was Anthony William Devitt Born May 1863 in Minersville, PA. His dad was William Devitt born in Ireland. Just last summer I found his gravesite in Minersville. It read "William Devitt, Esq. A Native of the Parish of Mayo, Ireland Died Jan. 6, 1866 Died 36 yrs. 3 mos. 6 days May He Rest In Peace" I'm doing this from memory, so I could be off on the date a bit. My grandmother had quite a few brothers & sisters, William, John, Loretto, Eleanor, Harold and two who died very young. I would love to find out William's wife's maiden name. On a census I find her already widowed and her first name was Mary. I'm thinking she may have been a Sweeney, as Anthony lived with Sweeneys after his mother passed away. Susie sweeney, a cousin, died and was buried I think in Ashland, PA, where Anthony Devitt lived with his bride Catherine Fahey and the oldest few children before moving to Phila., due to black lung condition of Catherine. • My grandfather was James Devitt, from county Limerick. he died more than 50 years ago. not sure how much stock to put into this story, but the story goes, he was actually a Davitt. • Hi, I too am descended from the Devitt tree, and am from the South Australian branch. My grandfather Patrick Devitt emigrated to South Australia in the mid 1870's, sponsored as an agricultural labourer by his uncle John Moloney. Patrick originated fron the Townland of Ballyvraneen, near Ennistymon Co. Clare, Ireland, and his parents were Patrick Devitt (born 1802) and his wife Ann (Nance)(nee Moloney)(born 1812). This Patrick Senior's father was, I believe, John. For 20 years or more I have been looking for a clue as to the whereabouts of any descendants of my grandfather's siblings who emigrated to in USA or Canada. Hoping someone out there can help me. • Love the web page. My name is Ron Devitt. I live in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. My parents Norman and Doreen and brothers Darcy and James and sister Dorie Lee all live Calgary, Alberta. My grandfather Cecil Norman Devitt was born in Douglas, Manitoba in the early 1900s. I have been to Ireland twice to do some research on the family name. • Enjoyed reading your site. I am one of the Devitt clan in Australia. The Devitt name is not all that common in Australia but has become a little more common due to my uncle having 16 children. We are still tracing our family tree back to Ireland. However it is really interesting to see in Brent Devitt's site how the name John Devitt has survived through all the generations. The name has been continued on in every generation of our family in Australia right up to my son Ryan Edward John Devitt.

• Great to see your web page. I am looking for Devitt family -have you any info of Devitt's of Brady's Bend, PA area? Here's what I have (not too much): Ann Devitt came from County Clare around 1850, arriving in Philadelphia, PA. Her sister Hanna (b.1812, d.1883) and brother, John (dates unknown) also came to US. John married and lived in East St. Louis Illinois. He lived with a daughter Mrs. James Carrigan after his wife's death(her name unknown. He died at age 80. Hanna married John Barry of Brady's Bend and after his death (no children that I know of) she lived with her sister Ann Devitt Cusick in Brady's Bend, PA and is buried in the church cemetary there. Ann Devitt Cusick married Patrick Cusick sometime in 1853 in Pittsburgh, PA. They lived in Armstrong County, and farmed there. They had 11 children. Ann lived to be 74, and died in Aug. 1898. I come from the Cusick-Devitt line on my mother's side. Can you help with any additional information? Do you know of any County Clare Devitt's? I unfortunately don't know very much of my family history other than the fact that my ancestors had a disagreement at some point and one faction of the family took the name Devitt as opposed to Davitt. • Hi there, ....from a Davitt. Is it a rule that you brook no variations? No Mc or Mac ..or Davitt. In the 1840/50s many of our ancestors were illiterate so the spelling of their names was down to the first literate person that wrote it down. Hence my grandaunt's marriage in Manayunk PA records her name as Devitt on the certificate but her literate sister keeps to Davitt.Thus are new names invented! Of the descendants of the O'Doherty clan the most famous by far was Michael Davitt, founder of the Land League in 1879 and later Member of Parliament for several different constituencies.
